Sermon #16 — The Doctrine of God, Pt. 7: Three in One

Mystery within a Mystery; photo by GAC

In a theological context, a mystery is not a puzzle to be solved but rather a truth that exceeds the rational capacity of human beings.  Certainly, the top of the list of mysteries in the Christian faith is the doctrine of the Trinity.  The doctrine of a Triune God is crucial to the Christian faith; without it, Christianity as we have known it would be impossible.  And yet, it has come to be my view that the more one says in explanation of the doctrine of the trinity, the closer one comes to being wrong.  Still, to say nothing about the triune nature of God is to leave people ignorant of the foundational truth of the faith.  It’s a tricky position that the faithful Christian preacher cannot escape.  So, here is my effort to approach this mystery of the Faith.

Read these passages of scripture before you listen to this sermon:  Psalm 42:1-11 and Mark 1:9-11.
